30th Annual Asian American Mental Health Training hosted by LA County

Eastern Harmony Mental Health recently participated in LA County's 30th Annual Asian American Mental Health Training, where we learned a lot and made connections with many doctors and scholars. The event explored topics such as how generational and cultural differences can impact views on education, work, friendships, and dating. These differences often lead to a lack of communication within families, which can trigger emotional outbursts, depression, and even fractured relationships.

“You can’t choose your family, but you can choose your therapist.”

Key topics discussed included neurodiversity, responses to stress and challenges, disabilities in social contexts, and the difficulty of detecting brain injuries, which can have a major impact on our sensory systems. These challenges can make it hard to focus, process information, plan, manage time, and even lead to sleep problems. Interestingly, disability rates in the Asian community are lower than average, but autism rates are significantly higher than in other groups.

Learning together with a group of mental health professionals was in itself a healing experience.
